Self-portrait #mother#artist#ally (36″x24″) Through my work I’ve learned to speak
up and tell my story. This painting explores several conversations that I have had with
friends about my determination in “never going back”. I do not take lightly the
freedoms I have gained over many decades.

The invisibility of my race: #nativeamerican#nochildleftbehind (24”x36”) Jennifer chose both the title of this painting
and to wear her graduation regalia for it. I was inspired to paint her when I became interested in a college essay she
wrote about the difficulties of her transition to the NYS public school system from her Native school on the Akwasasne
Native territory.

Reproductive decisions are complicated. (24”x36”) I photographed Dianna while we talked about women’s reproductive
issues. The painted torn paper shapes represent the hospital bracelets of some women who have died without receiving
proper reproductive care since Rowe v. Wade was overturned. (Dianna, ER physician, Saranac Lake, NY)

Carol #jesusandjohnwayne (18″x24″) This is a portrait of Carol. We spent many hours
discussing her rejection of evangelical nationalism, something her parents hoped she
embrace. She spoke of unconditional love and her journey toward an authentic life.

Jamele #artthenewreligion (18″x24″) This is my friend, Jamele. I learned a lot about
racial profiling in upstate NY from him. The urgency of the Black Lives Matter movement
is something we spoke out about a lot during our artist residency.

Carol and David #protectingwhatwehave Forest management, forest succession,
forest conservation versus clear cutting– this couple met while studying at Paul Smith’s
College and have spent many years since teaching others about forest sustainability
in the Adirondack Park.
